MATT DICONTI

HEAD COACH

Born and raised in Simi Valley, Coach Matt DiConti is a proud 1989 graduate of Royal High School—and he’s thrilled to be entering his second season as Head Coach of the Lady Highlanders.

“Coming back to Royal has been a full-circle moment for me,” he says. “This isn’t just where I coach—it’s home. And I couldn’t be more excited about the direction we’re heading.”

After taking the reins last season, Coach DiConti has already seen major strides in team chemistry, skill development, and overall competitiveness. With a strong foundation forming, he’s focused on building a culture rooted in toughness, togetherness, and pride in wearing Royal across the chest.

Coach DiConti brings over 30 years of coaching experience across youth, middle school, JV, and varsity levels. His career began in the early 1990s and includes stops at Hillside Middle School, Agoura High, Moorpark High, and multiple stints at Royal—where he previously helped bring home a league title. He’s had the opportunity to work alongside legendary basketball minds like Jim Harrick (UCLA), Detlef Schrempf (NBA), and Tex Winter (Chicago Bulls), and has coached standout talent like WNBA player Jennifer Lacy.

Off the court, he’s a man of many callings: a Christian author, the host of Faith and Freedom with Matt DiConti, a wedding photographer and business owner (DiConti Weddings), and a psychology student at Moorpark College pursuing his degree with plans to become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

Coach DiConti lives in Simi Valley with his wife Kristin, their two sons, and their lovable Yorkie, Leo.

Known for his passion, attention to detail, and dynamic high-pressure defense, Coach DiConti brings energy, vision, and heart into everything he does. He’s on a mission to restore Royal Girls Basketball to greatness—one season, one player, and one play at a time.

Alaina Chavez

Coach Alaina, 28, is stepping into her first season as the Junior Varsity Head Coach for the Royal High School Girls Basketball program. A Royal alumna herself (Class of 2015), she previously coached the freshman team during the 2015–2016 season. A lifelong basketball player, she competed in travel ball and four years at Royal, and now brings that same passion back to the court to inspire and guide the next generation of Lady Highlanders.

Coach Alaina's philosophy is simple: “Walk before we run—and once we start running, let’s really hit the ground running.” She emphasizes strong fundamentals, confidence, and team chemistry while helping her players grow both on and off the court. Outside of basketball, Coach Alaina works in sales, holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Cal Lutheran University, and proudly served five years in the U.S. Navy. This season, she looks forward to building a culture of hard work, positivity, and love for the game.

Gil Guevarra

Asst. Coach Gil Guevarra is stepping into his first season with the Royal High School Girls Basketball program. A graduate of Adolfo Camarillo High School, he was a multi-sport athlete who played four years of football and one year of basketball, competing as both a shooting guard and small forward. After high school, he continued his love for the game by playing in men’s adult leagues for more than six years, as well as competitive 3-on-3 tournaments that kept his passion and skills sharp.

Coach Gil’s philosophy is simple: “Some people want it to happen, some people wish it would happen, others make it happen.” He values toughness, energy, and accountability—qualities he now brings to the Lady Highlanders as both a mentor and motivator. Off the court, he is married and the proud father of four children, grounding his coaching in the same dedication and family values he lives by every day.
